Tony Blair has emerged as a clear favourite to become the first
permanent EU president.

European leaders led by Angela Merkel of Germany and Nicolas Sarkozy of
France will act swiftly to make the EU's reform charter a reality after
Ireland's Yes vote, despite the lone resistance of Vaclav Klaus,
president of the Czech Republic.

Floods leave 200 dead and 750,000 homeless in India PDF Print E-mail

Five days of torrential rain have left at least 205 people dead and
750,000 displaced in southern India, authorities said. Floods submerged
villages, severed transport and communication links and raised fears of
disease spreading in relief camps.

Thousands still missing after earthquake devastates countryside and
rescue workers begin to look for bodies rather than survivors

Rescue workers reported today that entire villages had been sucked under
the earth after the the devastating earthquake that hammered western
Sumatra, estimating that at last 600 people had lost their lives in the
countryside surrounding Pandang.
