Strong earthquake jolts Alaska PDF Print E-mail

QUINHAGAK, Alaska (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off Alaska on Wednesday morning, according to reports.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center. It struck about 19 miles south-southwest of Quinhagak, a small city with about 600 residents.

The center of the earthquake was located about 0.1 mile deep, according to the report, making it an extremely shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often tend to cause more damage.

A spokesman for the United States Geological Survey said it was checking on damage report.
